I guess it is a story told hundreds of times by now but when I applied for this bursary in early 2020, I could not imagine how the rest of the year would have planned out - although with all the amazing support from Jerwood, this is not the tail of isolation it could have easily been!

Behind the Magic

In order to be able to remove background from original footage, you need state-of-the-art camera technology, a lot of lighting and as much green as you can get, but for our process the magic is definitely not all in the equipment but the brilliant people operating it!

Scouting for Stares

Any comments on why this title is not appropriate are truly welcome! – I couldn’t escape from the alliteration. Anyway, moving swiftly on Squeeze Box process has begun brilliantly. Naturally it would with the all star cast of local creatives but confirming it feels good. We have been ‘confined’ to Zoom, our offices, backrooms and bedrooms yet the energy and creativity has flowed!

One humble hour of exercise each day is essential. For Hugh, escaping the constant myriad of disinformation, cancellations and battles for care is becoming impossible. Loneliness, anxiety, the mundane repetitiveness of video calls, conflicting rules, mounting trauma – all this has jumbled his tired, restless brain. The reality of being a disabled artist is hitting home. Unable to be in others’ company creates a mind-numbing strain on Hugh’s imagination. Real, dream and imagined worlds begin to blur until the only thing that makes sense is nonsense. Hugh desperately searches for ways to reconnect above the virtual noise. Even with a perceived abundance of time, is it too late to escape?
