Thank you for visiting our access page for BOXED! We hope it is useful - we will update this page as we develop the final work, so please do revisit in the weeks leading up to the 21st & 22nd of May…
BOXED! and Access – This original piece of work is a site-responsive promenade performance. This means that the audience will be divided into smaller groups and are guided around the Barnfield. When you arrive, you can group with people you’re already with or join a group. We will aim for the group to be around 5 or 6 people. Most of the rooms you will visit are quite spacious, but the corridor may feel a little claustrophobic. We have designed the experience so that there will not be too many groups in the corridor at one time. The whole audience will be together at the beginning and end of the experience.
The Easy Read Guide will be available by the end of April. This will give you a guide of what to expect, if you want to know more about what will happen during the show
Whilst the performance element will be intense, loud in places and emotionally driven, the spaces you visit will be relaxed. To us, this means, doors throughout will be left open and audience members are invited to come and go, position themselves wherever feels comfortable in the space and respond to the work in whatever way feels comfortable to them. There will be a chair in every space , but we anticipate the majority audience will stand throughout most spaces.
There will also be an access worker called Jumper. They are not in character and will rotate between groups to check in on everyone. If, at any time you feel overwhelmed, please do return to the box office/front entrance, where there will be a break out space. You can also signal to Jumper if you need help at any time.
Observers and Participants
Depending on how you feel on the day, you can chose to be a participant or an observer. As you enter the building , you will be offered a green or red lanyard.
Green equals, I am up for getting involved in the performance
Red equals, looking forward to experiencing the work but I want to experience the work in my own way
You are welcome to swap your lanyard at any time and it does not define you in the space, it just gives the performers an idea of how to engage with everyone.
Specific access adjustments we will have in place
2 dedicated Support & Wellbeing staff members will be present throughout the show
BSL – interpreter Emma is a main performer and will be integrating BSL at each performance. Also we will have a dedicated interpreter on the 21st, who will be assigned a group.
AD – audience descriptions will be lightly integrated into the performance elements, but if more consistent descriptions will be helpful, please let us know when you buy a ticket and one of the creative team will support you
